    The Union Bus Station will close this fall, a change that will likely cheer developers who saw the operation as a detriment to downtown. Richard Tanenbaum spent years trying to buy the Union Bus Station.

    As developer of The Montgomery nearby, Tanenbaum was convinced the southwest corner of downtown could never reach its full potential without the operation moving elsewhere. Two years ago he gave up that mission, and turned over his files to Nicholas Preftakes, who was buying up properties surrounding the bus station, W Sheridan Ave. Preftakes, who has acquired much of the surrounding block the past few years, didn't return calls to The Oklahoman.

    Owners of the station confirmed Wednesday the station will indeed close, most likely this fall, with remaining bus traffic to set up shop at a truck stop east of downtown. But it could get sold — you never know what's going to happen. Allen said the closing has been in the works for several months following a decision by the Greyhound line to move its terminal to a site closer to Interstate If they stayed where they are, with I being realigned, it would make it that much further away and we would still have the buses going through downtown.
